**What was studied:** Researchers in China pooled 17 randomized trials with 904 people with autism. The trials tested supplements aimed at gut bacteria: probiotics (live "good" bacteria, either one strain or several), prebiotics (fibers that feed those bacteria), and synbiotics (a mix of both). Using a method that lets you compare treatments that were never tested head to head, they asked which type helped core autism symptoms most, such as social communication and repetitive behaviors.

**What they found:** Synbiotics came out ahead. They did better than placebo, and better than prebiotics or probiotics on their own. In the authors' words, the finding should be "interpreted cautiously and considered preliminary."

**Why it matters:** Many families are curious about gut-focused supplements for autism, and there are a lot of products on the market. This review hints that combining bacteria with the fiber that feeds them may matter more than either alone. It also gives future trials a clear question to test.

**Honest limits:** The trials were mostly small, and there are only a few of them for each type of supplement. The size of the benefit seen for synbiotics is large enough that it needs to be confirmed in bigger, careful trials before anyone relies on it. The studies used different products, doses and lengths of treatment. We read the published summary, not the full paper.
