**What was studied:** Two new papers looked at GLP-1 medicines (the drug family that includes semaglutide) in people with schizophrenia, who often gain weight and develop blood sugar problems on antipsychotic medication. The first pooled 7 randomized trials with 481 people taking antipsychotics. The second used Danish national health records to follow 3,042 people with schizophrenia after they started a GLP-1 medicine in everyday care.

**What they found:** In the pooled trials, people on a GLP-1 medicine lost about 7 kg (15 lb) more than people on placebo, and their waist size and blood sugar also improved. Psychiatric symptoms did not change either way. Stomach and gut side effects were more common, but people didn't drop out more often. In the Danish records, starting a GLP-1 medicine was followed by clear drops in long-term blood sugar (HbA1c) and blood fats.

**Why it matters:** Physical health problems are a major reason people with schizophrenia live shorter lives. Together, these studies suggest the metabolic benefits seen in trials also show up in real-world care.

**Honest limits:** The trials were few and short, and their weight results varied a lot. The Danish study wasn't a randomized trial, so it can't fully prove the medicine caused the changes. Neither study showed these medicines improve psychiatric symptoms themselves.
